that's the idea. do a few test squares, check each edge. it will show if you beam is not straight too. I.E. if the bevel is more one side than the other.
lasers are sort of machine dependent, so any advice, is just a suggestion. see what works best with your machine.

the laser beam focus is cone shaped, coming to a point at the focal point and then spreading out again after that.
try getting the focal point half way through the material, or use a longer focal length lens, or both

My 1st guess would be final mirror to nozzel .. i.e. reflecting of the side of the nozzel.
