Was the disk the same one that came with the machine?

It sounds more like a driver issue or mismatch in versions. Can you try on another PC?

Dave, all sorted not it turned out that windows was set to look for genuine drivers, a few changes in the advanced system settings and it downloaded the EZ USB FX2 driver for the machine. So fingers crossed that should be it now, thanks for all your help in trying to solve the problem. Happy new year :)
